Happy First Friday everyone! It’s definitely fitting on this First Friday to mention Ryan’s first community theater performance. Tonight is the opening night of “Father of the Bride” at Pull Tight Theatre. Although tonight is sold out, there are still several shows with tickets available. Get yours here.

You know, I think one of the things that most attracted Ryan and me to one another (besides our obvious charming personalities and dashing good looks) is  the fact that we both love music and the arts. He was a theater kid who took piano and guitar lessons; I was a choir kid who could create almost anything with a few scraps and some art supplies. This is one of the reasons why we are both so excited about Ryan’s return to the stage this month. It hasn’t been easy with me having back surgery and trying to recover during the time that Ryan had play rehearsal five nights a week, but all of his hard work has paid off. (I know because I got to see a special sneak peak performance earlier this week.) Hope you will make it out to see the show!

In honor of our love for music and the arts, this First Friday is dedicated to our first concert.

As Ryan mentioned in his entry here, we went to the SafetySuit show in Nashville a while back. We love SafetySuit and have been fans since the old days before they were on a record label when they were known as Crew. It’s been almost four years since I first saw them in concert. My friend and bridesmaid Kelly found Crew as a local Nashville artist on MySpace. She had wanted to check out some local acts and after hearing their music online, I told her that we had to go to their next concert. That concert happened to fall on the same week that I started my new job at Gordian Health Solutions (which is now Onlife Health). I was making it through my first week and getting excited about the weekend show when I was introduced to Carmen Brown who worked in the Client Services department. I was surprised that Carmen actually had a Crew poster up on her cubicle wall. “I love them!” I told her. “My friends and I are going to their concert this weekend!” “Seriously?!” she asked. “The lead singer is my husband.” And I knew that it must be fate. 🙂

We went to that first concert at 12th and Porter and loved them even more after seeing them in person. As Ryan mentioned in his blog, they put on such an awesome show. So we started going to all their Nashville shows at 12th and Porter and at On the Rocks. It was at the first On the Rocks show that I went to that I met Arnold, a guy who actually works with me but I hadn’t had a chance to meet at the office. Arnold was Crew’s merchandise manager at the time, and probably one of their biggest promoters. I also convinced a college friend of mine (and later bridesmaid) to come to that show with me that night. Molly was really skeptical and it took me a lot of convincing to get her to come. She kept saying, “I don’t really ever like stuff like that.” And “I’ve heard lots of bands who were trying to make it, and I’m telling you that I never like them.” But I’m pretty sure she fell in love immediately when they started playing. Molly convinced our friend Amanda to meet us up there, and she became a fan too. Soon we had a big group going to all of their concerts. I like to think I’ve contributed to their success. 🙂 It helped that I worked with Carmen, and Arnold and could get all the latest updates firsthand. [As a side note, you should know that all the people I’ve met who are involved with SafetySuit/Crew are some of the nicest people ever. I ♥ them.]

When Ryan and I became friends, some of the first music I introduced him to was Crew and Dave Barnes (another awesome local artist). Like everyone else I introduced them to, Ryan became an instant fan. So I invited him to their next concert. That was so long ago that Ryan and I hadn’t even officially started dating yet. But we stood by each other at the concert, and there were definitely some sparks. I was just still trying to ignore it at that stage. We went to several more Crew concerts after we started dating and have been to a couple more since they were signed to Universal Records and changed their name to SafetySuit. It always brings back fond memories of that first concert together.

Be sure to check out SafetySuit! You will probably love them.

Hello Gang! Just thought I would give you all an update on our weekend. Saturday night we went to Ru San’s with some of our friends that Savannah went to college with. Savannah and I had not been to Ru San’s in FOREVER! I had forgotten how delicious their sushi is. I think we stopped going because the techno music they play, while enjoyable and creates an authentic chic Japanese Sushi Bar experience, was so loud. You can barely hear yourself enjoying their delicious sushi. Well I am happy to report, they have decreased the volume, at least between the hours of 6:30pm and 8:00pm (which is when we were there). And the sushi is still awesome! (Side note though: although Ru San’s is good, the best sushi in Nashville is Peter’s Thai and Sushi in Brentwood).

After sushi, the group went to one of Savannah and my favorite bands EVER, SafetySuit. They put on one of the best live shows. They have so much fun and such a great respect and love for their fans. They went to number 1 on VH-1’s Top 20 Countdown and still willingly agreed to come back to 12th and Porter for $10 a ticket. If you get a sec, you should check them out. You will not regret the decision. Despite the cold, we managed to show some smiles and excitement!

Sunday Savannah and I went to church at Woodmont Hills and then went to lunch with our friend Heather. We went to Chili’s on West End. I always enjoyed Chili’s but they have this new going on that is FANTASTIC! For $6.29 you get chips and salsa, a bowl of soup and a house salad. Oh wait! Did I mention they are all BOTTOMLESS! That’s right. Chili’s All-You-Can-Eat for $6.29. And if you get the Citrus-Balsamic Vinaigrette, you basically have the Quesadilla Explosion Salad, sans quesadillas and grilled chicken (which if this is more your speed, then this is their best salad and the only salad I have known Savannah to crave. She really doesn’t like salads, so this speaks volumes for her to crave it). So that’s our money saving tip for the week!

After lunch we headed back home where I proceeded to crash due to a sinus headache, which pretty much consumed my evening. I even missed the Super Bowl because I could barely move to get something to drink, let alone get out of the house. We don’t have cable and although we have a digital TV, our antenna doesn’t get CBS, so going out would have been the only choice to see the Super Bowl. I wasn’t too disappointed since my team, The Steelers, didn’t even make the playoffs. Although I am sad I missed the commercials. Thank goodness for YouTube and Hulu, right?!

Well I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great week! Get geared up for Valentine’s Day! You still have time to get a date!

Well, it’s me again. Ryan has been a little MIA in the blog department lately, but I’m sure he’ll post something soon. We have a pretty busy schedule ahead of us for the next few days and over the weekend, and then he’ll be on a business trip to Louisiana. So maybe after that…

We had a fantastic Halloween weekend and hope you all did too! Friday night we went to see one of our favorite bands, The Avett Brothers, play at the Louisville Palace in Louisville, KY. I’m really not sure what they call their music, but I often refer to it as punk bluegrass. Although they were in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium the next night, we decided that we didn’t want to be at a concert on Halloween. Not wanting to forfeit seeing them, we decided on a road trip to Louisville. This was our first experience at the Louisville Palace, and we really enjoyed it. It’s a beautiful venue, and they are super relaxed with the atmosphere—people were rushing the aisles to get closer and dancing everywhere and taking pictures the entire time, and security wasn’t trying to prevent any of it like they sometimes do at certain Nashville venues. The Avett Brothers put on an amazing, energy-filled show as usual (we’ve seen them a couple times before). Take a second and check out the Avett Brothers. Also check out the Louisville Palace.

On Halloween, Ryan and I decorated the townhouse, made a few snacks and entertained some of our family and friends. It was a great time complete with a costume contests (so many cute contests), a candy corn buffet (over 10 flavors!) and trick or treat piñata style. Ryan and I were honeymooners this year. (What could be better since we were still in our first month of marriage and in between our honeymoons?) We wore bee costumes, carried honey pots and had plastic butts tied around our waists. We definitely got a lot of laughs. Here’s a picture:

Honey Mooners

We didn’t feel right judging the Halloween contest ourselves, so we had 6 people who weren’t in attendance do the judging. The winner of the contest was…drum roll please…

Demon Phallen

My little sister Phallen as a demon. My older sister Brook actually made Phallen’s skirt, so I’m sure she’ll want to bask in the glory of Phallen’s win as well. Everyone had great costumes, and we’re so glad we got to see some of our favorite people that night. The most popular costume choice this year was definitely a bee. Although Ryan and I were officially “honeymooners,” the base of our costume was a bee outfit. We also dressed our puppy LuLu as a bee. Then, lo and behold, our niece Penelopi shows up as an adorable bee, along with her Aunt Brook who showed up as a queen bee. We were a cute little family of bees.

Following the fun Halloween weekend, we’ve had a great week with the celebration of our one-month anniversary. Can you believe it has been one month already?!?! We used one of the Cheesecake Factory gift cards we got as a wedding present and treated ourselves to a night out in honor of the celebration. We also got to open our one-month anniversary present from my mom. We’ll talk more about that in our next blog.

From Savannah:

Well, Ryan and I thought this blog would be an excellent way to keep everyone up to date on our lives, but it’s starting to look like that might not actually be the case… Between Ryan spending his days job searching and networking and me working all the time and both of us spending any free time trying to figure out wedding stuff…we don’t seem to have any time to blog! We haven’t even had a chance to finish setting up our wedding website yet. Ah!!!! We need to hire a personal assistant. Anyone willing to work for free? 🙂 That’s about all we can afford right now…

So it has been a week and a half since the last post. What exciting things have gone on since then? Well, last Friday we went to the grand opening event at the Loveless Barn with a group of friends. So what is the Loveless Barn? It is a new event hall (shaped like a huge barn) that was built behind the Loveless Cafe, a Nashville institution which has been around since 1951 serving some of the best Southern food you can find in the state. The event at the Loveless Barn was a concert featuring Donna the Buffalo and GRAMMY nominees the Steeldrivers. If you like bluegrass, you will love the Steeldrivers. They are amazing! (I love bluegrass. 🙂 ) You can listen some of their stuff on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Steeldrivers/dp/B000XPU63S

We’ve had some other fun stuff going on this week like our friend Andy’s 25th birthday bash, otherwise known as Andypalooza. This week also marked Day 1 of my bridal gown search. My loving mom ventured out of Dickson County on Wednesday despite the ice patches on the road and we ventured to some of the high-end bridal boutiques around Nashville. I would post pictures of some of my favorites, but I don’t want a curious groom to accidentally see any possible gowns. 🙂 Hope you all have had a good week. Remember to keep Ryan and his job search in your prayers!
